Vet Says Dalmatian Will Have 3 Puppies, Dog Gives Birth To 18 Instead

When your dog is pregnant, you want to know how many pups to prepare for. After all, this number could very well affect everything from potential adopters to whelping space. Cecilia Lanton Bunkergot of Ballarat, Australia loves Dalmatians.  In fact, her life is all about the beautiful breed.  She trains, shows, and competes with them.  For 27 years, she has also owned a high end breeding program, CC Dalmatians, that has produced numerous titled and champion dogs.

In other words, Cecilia knows just about everything there is to know about Dalmatians.  So when she decided to ʙʀᴇᴇᴅ a litter, she chose her titled show dog, Miley, to be a first time mom.  After careful consideration, she chose Astro Wonder Boy to be the stud. The breeding took and like all responsible breeders, Cecilia provided Miley with veterinary care throughout her gestation period.  With the help of x-rays and ultrasounds, her vet speculated that Miley would have 3 pups.  As time passed Cecilia sensed that the count was off.  However, Miley continued to be healthy and happy and that was the most important thing.

After her gestation passed, Miley began her labor and Cecilia called on the team of veterinary nurses that she had on standby to help ensure a safe delivery.  After the 3 predicted pups were born with no sign of stopping, Miley’s delivery team was sʜᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ to deliver pup after pup.  For Astro’s part, he must have been a true Wonder Boy because Miley gave birth to 18 healthy puppies to the surprise of everyone. When the time arrived for Miley ᴛᴏ ɢɪᴠᴇ ʙɪʀᴛʜ, a team of veterinarian nurses were in place on standby to ensure her labour went as smoothly as possible. Cecilia and the nurses were astounded as Dalmatian litters average on at about 8 – 10 pups per litter and their first litters are often much smaller. Since there are so many little guys, Cecilia and her husband are helping the new mother with the puppy-care. There is always a fresh supply of warm milk available for the little guys. In the meantime, Miley’s record-breaking achievement has been recorded by the Australian National Kennel Club as the largest litter in Australian history out of over 40,000 Dalmation births.

Mom and pups were all safe and healthy.  Despite Cecilia’s initial sʜᴏᴄᴋ, she was thrilled with the huge litter and of course, had no problem taking care of all the dogs as any good breeder would.  One thing we’d like to ask her though, was she getting ᴡᴏʀʀɪᴇᴅ Miley was going ᴛᴏ ɢɪᴠᴇ ʙɪʀᴛʜ to 101 puppies? “It’s a picture because they’re just white, and you think what’s gone wrong here… But the spots actually only come out, sort of, the week later.” Please share this fun story with your family and friends.
