The image of a young brown snake pitched in ᴍᴏʀᴛᴀʟ ᴄᴏᴍʙᴀᴛ with a notorious redback spider have been watched millions of times since it was posted yesterday. The juvenile eastern brown snake flailed around as it tried to escape the clutches of the redback spider’s web . In less than a minute, the Australian pea-size spider can be seen shimmying down its thread to give the young snake a ꜰᴀᴛᴀʟ ʙɪᴛᴇ. We really don’t get to see spiders and snakes ꜰɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ, but they do. We usually see spiders and snakes in garages or basements. The snake, hopelessly ᴇɴsɴᴀʀᴇᴅ by the spider’s web, offers only a pitiful resistance despite having a ʙɪᴛᴇ that ᴋɪʟʟs more Australians than any other snake. Thirteen people have been ᴋɪʟʟᴇᴅ by brown snakes since 2000. Although dwarfed by the serpent, the spider carries its only ᴅᴇᴀᴅʟʏ weapon: fangs packed with a ɴᴇᴜʀᴏᴛᴏxɪɴ blamed for leaving10,000 people a year in ᴀɢᴏɴʏ. Despite being Australia’s second-most ᴠᴇɴᴏᴍᴏᴜs reptile, the brown snake’s ʙɪᴛᴇ had little impact on its larger, muscular rival. One creature that seems to have developed a strategy from being ᴋɪʟʟᴇᴅ by redback ᴘᴏɪsᴏɴ is the male of the species. As the place is not used, spiders build their web and snakes build a shelter for themselves. spiders avoid being eaten by the ᴅᴇᴀᴅʟɪᴇʀ females by becoming “cradle sɴᴀᴛᴄʜᴇʀs”. Sᴇxᴜᴀʟʟʏ immature females do not consume males but because their ɢᴇɴɪᴛᴀʟɪᴀ are not properly formed, potential mates puncture their exoskeletons with their fangs and then insert their “embolus” – a whip-like organ – to deposit sᴘᴇʀᴍ. The sᴘᴇʀᴍ is stored inside the female and, when she eventually reaches maturity, her eggs become fertilised.
A ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ between two of Australia’s most ᴠᴇɴᴏᴍᴏᴜs creatures has unfolded in a woman’s backyard shed and ended in an unlikely outcome. Again, the juvenile snake was discovered dead in the spider;s web the morning after the battle.
