by Thai Rᴇsᴄᴜᴇ worker Mana Srivate has performed dozens of resuscitation attempts in his 26-year career, but never before on an elephant.
Mana was called into action while off duty on a road trip late on Sunday, successfully reviving a baby elephant sᴛʀᴜᴄᴋ by a motorcycle while crossing a road with a group of wild pachyderms in the eastern province of Chanthaburi.
Even if he has been performing resuscitations for over two decades, he had never done it on an elephant. However, his determination sᴀᴠᴇᴅ the young ᴄᴀʟꜰ’s ʟɪꜰᴇ.
In video that went viral on social media, Mr Srivate is seen giving heart massage to the creature as colleagues a few metres away treated the dazed and ɪɴᴊᴜʀᴇᴅ motorcyclist.
To make things even worst, the rescuer was even more under pressure as the rest of the herd wasn’t far away, so they could have come there any moment. Miraculously, after a dramatic Rᴇsᴄᴜᴇ that last roughly ten minutes, the calf revived.
Mana told Reuters: “It’s my instinct to sᴀᴠᴇ ʟɪᴠᴇs, but I was worried the whole time because I can hear the mother and other elephants calling for the baby.”
“I assumed where an elephant heart would be located based on human theory and a video clip I saw online.
“When the baby elephant starting to move, I almost cried.”
After 10 minutes, the elephant slowly got up. Once the elephant was conscious, it was loaded onto a truck and taken to another location for treatment, before being returned to the ᴀᴄᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛ site. The baby elephant was eventually reunited with its family when they heard it calling out to them.
It was an incredible resolution in what could have been a far more tragic ᴀᴄᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛ. Thankfully, the motorcyclist involved in the ᴀᴄᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛ did not sustain serious ɪɴᴊᴜʀɪᴇs as well.
Mana pointed out that the rate of ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜs caused by traffic ᴀᴄᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛs is high, and that even though he’s performed CPR on dozens of humans, the elephant is the only CPR recipient he’s ever successfully revived.
