A unique ᴘɪᴇʙᴀʟᴅ fawn with a white face ᴡᴀs sᴀᴠᴇᴅ from ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ after its mother rejected it after ʙɪʀᴛʜ. Although the fawn was very beautiful with blueish eyes, the mother, who was also ᴘɪᴇʙᴀʟᴅ, surprisingly rejected the fawn, nearly caused him to ᴅɪᴇ.
Luckily, this unique fawn also ʜᴀᴅ ʀᴀʀᴇ luck on its side as it was ʙᴏʀɴ at Deer Tracks Junction, a ᴡɪʟᴅʟɪꜰᴇ sanctuary and petting zoo in Cedar Springs, Michigan, north of Grand Rapids. What made the fawn different would be celebrated, not rejected. The fawn would become a local star and ᴀᴛᴛʀᴀᴄᴛɪᴏɴ for the park and ᴀᴛᴛʀᴀᴄᴛ international interest. Hilary Powell, the owner of the farm, became the fawn’s new mom when his mother, Bunny, rejected him. Powell carefully ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴇᴅ him from a bottle four times a day. The whole family made sure that the fawn got extra care to help him overcome the health conditions that cause the ᴘɪᴇʙᴀʟᴅ ɢᴇɴᴇᴛɪᴄ trait. Deer who are ʙᴏʀɴ ᴘɪᴇʙᴀʟᴅ tend to ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʜᴇᴀʀɪɴɢ ᴀɴᴅ ᴠɪsɪᴏɴ ᴘʀᴏʙʟᴇᴍs, and the fawn also had problems because of ɪɴꜰᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴs. Her son gave him the name, Dragon, because he wanted the him to have a tough “manly” name, according to Powell’s husband, Kelly. If the fawn sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇᴅ, he would grow rare pink antlers, making him stand out even more. In the wild, he would have almost no chance to survive since he would not be able to ʜɪᴅᴇ from ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀs. The little Dragon found a new loving home at Deer Tracks Junction, an animal farm on Cedar Springs, Mich, where he was also named dragon because of its ᴅɪꜰꜰɪᴄᴜʟᴛɪᴇs for sur.vival. Dragon is ᴘɪᴇʙᴀʟᴅ. Pɪᴇʙᴀʟᴅɪsᴍ is a condition characterized by the absence of ᴄᴇʟʟs called ᴍᴇʟᴀɴᴏᴄʏᴛᴇs in certain areas of the skin and hair. ᴍᴇʟᴀɴᴏᴄʏᴛᴇs produce the ᴘɪɢᴍᴇɴᴛ ᴍᴇʟᴀɴɪɴ, which contributes to hair, eye, and skin color. The absence of ᴍᴇʟᴀɴᴏᴄʏᴛᴇs leads to patches of skin and hair that are lighter than normal. For this reason, Dragons’ face and underbody remain white. Pɪᴇʙᴀʟᴅɪsᴍ is quite a rare condition. This condition reduces their chance of sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴀʟ after their mother ᴀʙᴀɴᴅᴏɴs them since they are more visible to the ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀs. Unfortunately, Dragon pa.ssed away just before his first ʙɪʀᴛʜday due to health ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴs Sᴀᴅʟʏ, this is an update that I never wanted to have to make.
Despite all medical intervention available, we ʟᴏsᴛ our little Dragon. It has been a tough time here, and he will be greatly missed by all. He was so beautiful and I’m sure he was as sweet as could be also.
