The rare moment was ᴄᴀᴘᴛᴜʀᴇᴅ on camera by nineteen-year-old Eshanya Sharma, just outside his house. Eshanya took he picture moments before the keelback lost its ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ and became a tasty snack for the vine snake.
The photos show a green vine snake wrapped around a Buff striped krait. The keelback’s head stuck in the mouth of the vine snake moments before it chomps down.
Based in Karnataka, India in the Western Ghats, she says that while seeing snakes is not uncommon, seeing a ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ like this is a rare sight.
Eshanya has been practising his photography for about 5 years and is studying visual arts.
Eshanya recounts that it all happened one evening at the beginning of the Western Ghats monsoon season and there was no electricity for almost three days.
It was pouring rain that day so Eshanya’s father and uncle called an electrician and went out to pick him up. A short distance away, Eshanya’s uncle suddenly saw a Green Vine Snake hanging to a small branch of a plant. When he got closer to look, he saw something blowing.
There was a Buff striped keelback snake as well which was so well camouflaged on the branch was not visible from far, but seeing both the snakes on the same branch which had ᴇɴᴄᴏᴜɴᴛᴇʀᴇᴅ each other at same time.
Realizing there would be a ꜰɪɢʜᴛ, he asked Eshanya’s father to get a camera to record the rare event. Eshanya was also called to enjoy the spectacle.
Eshanya has taken great pictures however her camera is almost out of battery because there is no power and she cannot charge it properly.
“When I reached the spot the two snakes had already started with its ꜰɪɢʜᴛ and I started taking pictures waiting for the right moment as my camera allowed me to take only limited pictures and finally after few pics camera got shutdown. However I kept camera aside enjoyed one of the natures best moment which I encountered.”
In the end, Green Vine won the ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ and had a delicious meal. This was indeed a rare event that Eshanya had encountered.
