This feeling is not only limited to human beings but is the exact same in animals of all species. Elephants are known for their strong sense of community and familial ties. Now, a video showing a mother elephant protecting her calf from wandering too close to visitors at a national park reinforces the strong sense of kinship the gentle ɢɪᴀɴᴛs have.
It was just another beautiful day in the open ᴡɪʟᴅs of South Africa, and a tour group was doing what every tour group does when they visit. They kept their video cameras ready and rolling, ever on the lookout for signs of ᴡɪʟᴅʟɪꜰᴇ. Just when they were admiring the beautiful landscape, they came across a huge mama elephant and her newborn calf. The little elephant seemed minuscule in comparison to his mum, and the tour group waited in awe as the pair ambled across the road.
The video opens with the jumbo emerging from the woods with her calf and trying to cross a trail. While the mother walks towards the other side of the road, her calf follows her with his small strides. However, soon the calf gets distracted by the tourists who were filming this incident. With his curiosity triggered, the calf veers off from his path and begins to approach the tourists as if to take a closer look. The mama elephant was keeping a watchful eye on her baby, and as he changed direction to come closer to the tour group, she took action. Now, any mother doesn’t want her young offspring to approach strangers, and this mum was no different. Like any good mother, she wanted her baby to be safe.
The protective mother quickly pulled her baby away from the visitors and shielded it with her trunk. She gently guides the baby elephant with her trunk and brings him back to the route they were supposed to go. At one point, it also seems as if the jumbo is ᴡᴀʀɴɪɴɢ the tourists to stay away from her calf as she looks straight towards them while wagging its trunk.
I’m sure she knew that humans wouldn’t ʜᴀʀᴍ her baby, but it’s better to be safe than sorry! She quickly grabbed her calf and brought him under the protection of her powerfully massive body, using her size as a shield of sorts. You know by looking at her size, she’s not someone you want to be messing with. When it comes to her child, she means business!
The video amassed more than 1.5 million views on Twitter while leaving users truly amazed. One user wrote: “Such amazing creatures. This one predicted what the calf and her mother would have said if they could talk.” Another suspected that the calf may have seen humans for the first time which prompted him to approach them out of curiosity. A comment read: “That´s what parents are for. Teaching the young the ᴘᴇʀɪʟs of life. Stay away from humans at all costs, baby.”
They quickly disappeared into the bush. This video is an amazing testament of a mother’s love for her child and the watchful gaze any mother keeps on her baby.
