Wildlife Conservation Department. Recently a beautiful female elephant gave birth to adorable twin baby elephants at the sanctuary. The newborn babies were a replica of their mama and were blessed with good health. It is very donating for female elephants to give birth to twins. Most mother elephants will give birth to one baby per pregnancy.
Even the sanctuary caregivers had made it a point to care for the baby elephants and their mama. The little ones were adorable, and their cute gestures fascinated the visitors that visited the orphanage. The mother and the two siblings lived in an open enclosure with a small pond filled with water. The mama elephant always kept the little ones by her side, which was a natural motherly instinct.
The twin baby elephants grazed on the grass in the enclosure with their mother and enjoyed it on a lovely sunny day. The visitors were quite intrigued by the antics. The adorable creatures were still learning to graze. The mama elephant tried to help her kids learn new things and enjoy a sand bath. However, it was hilarious to find the little ones copying their mother’s every move. The two little ones would drink water if the mama elephant drank water. If the mother stood quietly, they would do the same.
After a while, the two baby elephants played with one another and their kind caregiver. Soon the other herd members joined the three of them, and the elephants went for a bath at the nearby water source.
How mother elephants Give birth?
The entire family unit circles around a female giving birth, protecting her from all sides. Females give birth while standing. The birth itself lasts only a few minutes. A single calf is usually born head and forelegs first. Twins have been documented, but are extremely rare. Mothers will consume the afterbirth to avoid detection by predators. The birth interval for elephants is about a year. Females may have up to 12 calves in their lifetime.
Calves at Birth
On average, newborn calves stand about 1 m (3 ft.) high and weigh 120 kg (264 lb.) at birth. Newborn male African elephants may weigh up to 165 kg (364 lb.). Newborn Asian elephant calves weigh about 91 kg (200 lb.). The newborn is helped to its feet by its mother and other females. Calves are able to stand on their own within minutes of birth. The mother and other females help guide the calf to nurse almost immediately. The trunk of the calf is still short, so it uses its mouth to nurse. Calves are able to walk within one to two hours of birth.
Calves nurse for the first six months of life. Elephant milk is high in fat and protein (100 times more than the protein contained in cow’s milk). On average, calves drink about 10 L (21 pt.) a day. Calves are not completely weaned until they are over two years of age and may weigh between 850-900 kg (1,874-1,984 lb.).
