A herd of elephants rushed to save the calf after getting sᴛᴜᴄᴋ in a watering hole. The heart-pounding scenes were captured in the famous Kruger National Park in South Africa. This area is famous for its large elephant herds.
African elephants need a lot of water to sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇ, as much as 225 litres of it every day. The wet season brings plenty to drink, but when rivers and waterholes start to dry up in winter, elephants are forced to get creative, sometimes digging up dry riverbeds in search of the scarce resource. All that time spent wallowing in sludgy pools can be ᴘᴇʀɪʟᴏᴜs, especially for calves still learning how to “elephant”. When the rest of this herd saw the mother sᴛʀᴜɢɢʟɪɴɢ to hoist her calf to safety, they rushed over to help. Elephant society is highly complex and family bonds are essential to survival. Finally, an old elephant rushed to help and free the baby elephant. The baby elephant, thought to be only 8 or 10 weeks old, was trapped in the watering hole and had a few tense minutes before being freed. His mother, also young and perhaps a first-time parent, could not help him. ‘The mother was waiting around for him, but she had a problem and didn’t know how to help the baby. ‘She climbed in and out again as if to show him how to do it, and he tried but couldn’t grip the slippery side. ” All in all, it was a pretty ᴛᴏᴜɢʜ day for this youngster – just as soon as it scrambles up, it gets an unceremonious bump to the head before face-planting the ground a few moments later . Then the elephant is free to return to the herd and go on about its day. In reality, the elephant was lucky there weren’t any ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀs lurking in the mud that would have taken advantage of this situation (and ᴠᴜʟɴᴇʀᴀʙʟᴇ young elephant) as it was sᴛᴜᴄᴋ in the mud.
