Humans are higher animals and we have special feelings for our family, friends and loved ones. Therefore, it will be ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢ for one of them to go, which breaks our hearts and brings tears to our eyes. However, we are not the only species to openly express our ɢʀɪᴇꜰ and ɢʀɪᴇꜰ when a loved one ᴅɪᴇs. Elephants, too, know what’s going on and feel ʟᴏsᴛ when one of their herds ᴅɪᴇs. This is exactly what happened in Siri Lanka.
Despite their enormous size and strength, elephants prefer to live together. They travel as a herd, sleep as a herd, and ᴇᴀᴛ as a herd. They often organize into fission-fusion societies, in which many family groups band together to communicate. Females usually live in family groups, consisting of one female with her young or several related females. These groups have no males, they are led by the oldest female in a matriarchal fashion.
When living in a herd, each member is linked together like a large family. They band together to help repel ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀs that might ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ or ᴇᴀᴛ one of their young. This is a grᴇᴀᴛ point of elephants.
In our story, an elephant leader had just ᴅɪᴇᴅ near Kalawewa Reserve in a tiny village in Sri Lanka. According to D. Ramasinghe, a wildlife official, the leader had engaged in a tough conflict with a tusker roaming around Kala Wewa for several days and he told that investigations revealed the elephant had received over twenty sᴛᴀʙʙɪɴɢs from a tusk.
After being critically ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋᴇᴅ by the tusker, the leader ᴅɪᴇᴅ surrounded by its herd. Then, hundreds of elephants, including calves, had arrived at the location, to mourn their collective ʟᴏss. Elephants make melancholy noises that can be heard for miles. One elephant after another approached the Dᴇᴀᴅ leader’s body, touched him with its trunk, cried out in ᴘᴀɪɴ, then bowed its head and left. The elephant was finally ʙᴜʀɪᴇᴅ on the banks of the Kalawewa River.
It is not clear if they have human ɢʀɪᴇꜰ features, but there have certainly been observations of them showing grᴇᴀᴛ interest in the ʙᴏᴅɪᴇs of those who have ᴅɪᴇᴅ. Let us know what you think of this story. Please leave a comment below the article!
