However, popular convention makes these creatures look ᴀɢɢʀᴇssɪᴠᴇ and ʙʟᴏᴏᴅᴛʜɪʀsᴛʏ animals, although they are hardly as ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs as saltwater or Nile crocodiles which are more ᴀɢɢʀᴇssɪᴠᴇ and larger.
But there are times when alligators ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ humans and even ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ each other. Just recently, reports of two large alligators ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋɪɴɢ each other in a golf course in South Carolina has made rounds on the internet.
The growling animals were ʟᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ in a ꜰɪᴇʀᴄᴇ Bᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ for two hours as sᴛᴜɴɴᴇᴅ players watched at the Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes in Hardeeville.
Matthew Proffitt who was golfing with friends caught the animals as they used their powerful jaws to try to overpower each other. He told Island Packet that he was just feet away from the monsters.
One of the animals is spotted chomping on the arm of the other alligator. That animal responds by ʙɪᴛɪɴɢ the head of its ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋᴇʀ. The two were then ʟᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ in that position for almost the entire ʙʀᴀᴡʟ. Neither one would let the other go.
“They would lay still for a few minutes, with their jaws ʟᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ on each other, and then try to roll or shake,” Mr Proffitt said. “The ꜰɪɢʜᴛ went on for about two hours,” he added.
The club shared footage of the epic Bᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ on Facebook, saying: “Sudden ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ playoff on the 18 yesterday! Keep your eyes open out there, the course is full of wildlife!”
The video, however, did not show how the ʙʀᴀᴡʟ ended, but the animals surely showed significant stamina to last the distance as it went on for many hours.
The video has been viewed over 7.9 lakh times since being posted. It has also garnered 12,000 ‘shares’ and hundreds of amazed comments.
“It’s mating season for gators, don’t get in the middle,” wrote one person in the comments section. “I will never golf again,” another declared.
While alligators are common in the area, Mr Proffitt said it was his first close ᴇɴᴄᴏᴜɴᴛᴇʀ. “We were pretty sure they wouldn’t mess with us, because they were ʟᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ in on each other,” he told the Island Packet. “But it was pretty ɴᴇʀᴠᴇ-ᴡʀᴀᴄᴋɪɴɢ seeing that.”
