by In a ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢ moment captured on camera, a black snake broke into a bird’s nest and sᴡᴀʟʟᴏᴡᴇᴅ all of its eggs. While the mother bird was away, the cunning snake sneaked up to the bird’s nest and ate all 4 eggs inside in just a few minutes.
Nature-lover Tan Nguyen had been hoping to capture the moment bird eggs hatched when he fixed a camera in a tree over the nest, after noticing the eggs inside.
But instead, the American YouTuber caught footage of the ravenous snake sᴡᴀʟʟᴏᴡɪɴɢ all four of the eggs whole before slinking away.
The restless mother bird leave her nest to search for food – leaving her eggs unattended. The hungry serpent wastes no time slithering up the tree and into the nest, making short work of the eggs.
“Found a nest in my front yard and decided to sneak my GoPro close by. Was hoping to see the eggs hatch but instead this happened,” he said.
Just about all snakes are capable of stretching their jaws around prey larger than their own head, but the egg-eater is arguably the most impressive at doing this. Contrary to popular belief, they do not dislocate their jaws. A snakes jaws are flexible, and are able to stretch widely. To put it in perspective, an adult egg-eaters head is about the size of one’s index finger, if not slightly smaller. Yet, they are capable of sᴡᴀʟʟᴏᴡɪɴɢ a large chicken egg whole. An incredible achievement.
Once the egg-eater has sᴡᴀʟʟᴏᴡᴇᴅ the egg completely, it keeps it in the “throat” region. Using its neck muscles, it pushes the egg up against sharp bones situated on the spine, and cracks the egg shell. It then squeezes and ᴄʀᴜsʜᴇs the egg slowly, sᴡᴀʟʟᴏᴡɪɴɢ the contents of the egg. Once it has squeezed out and sᴡᴀʟʟᴏᴡᴇᴅ everything inside the egg, it then regurgitates the ᴄʀᴜsʜᴇᴅ-up egg shell, and it comes out as a neat little package. It is a fascinating scene to watch.
